
Subsequently, Windows Embedded Standard 2009 reached EOL on January 8, 2019. The company then ceased to support its Windows Embedded for Point of Service SP3 and XP Embedded SP3 in 2016. Microsoft’s Windows XP Home and Professional SP3 designed for client PCs reached end-of-life on April 8, 2014. Meanwhile, the continuous support of Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 enabled some users to receive security updates on Windows XP Home and Professional SP3-based machines through the use of a registry hack. Given the name, the operating system was aimed at Point of Service embedded applications and therefore was not intended for client computers. The software giant on April 9, 2019, ended extended support for its for Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 OS, which was the last OS based on the Windows XP with SP3. Being one of the longest living consumer operating systems ever, Windows XP’s 'official' lifespan totaled 17 years, 7 months, and 16 days. For over a decade Windows XP was the most widely used Operating System in the world.Microsoft this week ended support for the very last Windows XP-based operating system, essentially marking the end of the platform and an era. Microsoft Windows XP was succeeded by Windows Vista in 2007 and mainstream support for the Operating System stopped in 2009. The second service pack also came with Wi-Fi capability, a pop-up blocker (for use on the Internet Explorer 6 web browser), Bluetooth support and more. These service packs hoped to fix common bugs and problems with the OS, including minor bugs and security fixes. Microsoft Windows XP came with three major service packs which were released a year, three years and eight years respectively after the release of the actual Operating System.

Microsoft Windows XP, as with many of the Windows Operating System, was released in Home and Professional editions, both of which were often bundled in with new computers as if often the case with Windows Operating Systems and the larger manufacturers and retailers.
